From the letters of John Newton
Oh, what a reminder for me personally.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: John 16:13
A few minutes of the Spirit's teaching will furnish us with more real, useful and experimental knowledge--than toiling through whole folios of commentators and expositors! It will be our wisdom to deal less with the streams--and be more close in applying to the fountain-head. The Scripture itself, and the Spirit of God--are the best and the only sufficient expositors of Scripture. Whatever men have valuable in their writings--they got it from Scripture; and the Scripture is as open to us--as to any of them. There is nothing required but a teachable, humble spirit; and academic learning, as it is commonly called, is not necessary in order for this.
As a minister, I endeavor to avoid all panaceas, singularities, 'hidden truths' and 'new discoveries' in Scripture. I wish to advance nothing which I cannot maintain upon the authority of the Bible in our English language--which I deem sufficient to make us and our hearers wise unto salvation.
The New Testament is a plain book designed for plain people. The gospel is to be preached to the poor and simple, who are just as capable of receiving it as the educated--and in some sense more so. I therefore lay little stress upon any academic learning--which depends upon a knowledge of original Greek and Hebrew languages, or requires a larger degree of capacity and genius to be understood.
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:15

The Word
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God..... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:1-2, 14
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He Himself. And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He hath on his vesture and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

a brief thought from Psalm 43
O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
Such a simple prayer and yet such a necessary prayer for the soul.
If God does not send we are left in darkness. If God does not send understanding (light) we will only know the truth in a cold, dead way. If He does not send truth then we will continue to live in our own ideas, our own opinions of 'truth' which only lead to death. Unless light and truth lead us and bring us then we have not been brought and we are still in darkness.
Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by Me."
"Looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith."

What Does the Lord Understand? part 4
A continuation of excerpts from Dr. Jay Wimberly's sermon notes of a message delivered September 7, 2003 to The Main Street Baptist Church in Auburndale, FL.
The text is from Micah 4:12: But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor.
Matthew 3:17. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased. [Fully satisfied, as one accepts something in full payment]
Matthew 17:5. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Romans 5:8. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
God understands that Jesus Christ is His Son, His Messiah, the One to be heard, believed and followed.

An excerpt from Dr. Jay Wimberly's sermon notes of a message delivered September 7, 2003 to The Main Street Baptist Church in Auburndale, FL. The text is from Micah 4:12:
"But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor."
I have searched the scriptures and cannot find the understanding of the Lord. "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!" (Romans 11:33)
Yet I hear men say quite often, "Oh, I think the Lord understands..." [Almost always in justification of something they have done or want to do.]
I thought it well to investigate this, to research what the Lord understands, and see if it at all matches what I hear people talking about-- what people are attributing to Him.
The first thing that is obvious in the scriptures about what the Lord understands is that He is not thinking about a lot of the things that are occupying our minds.
He's not nearly as recreational as we are.
His logic is different:
He considers truth more valuable than creature comforts.
The gospel is more important than money.
Heavenly concerns are greater than earthly.
Is anyone interested in going on any farther? God's understanding is different than ours!

Psalm 111
Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.
2 The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
3 His work is honourable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.
5 He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.
6 ¶ He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.
7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.
8 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

big bang experiment update
If you read my previous post then here is a link regarding the big bang experiment:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7604293.stm
Now my questions are:
1. How long before this 'thing' creates an earth?
2.When will a cave man pop out of the "thing"? Geico should be standing by and waiting to shoot a commercial.
In all sincerity hear what the scriptures say:
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Gen 1:1
"But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, ... He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures. Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. " Jer. 10:10-14
"By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect." Psa 33:6
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." John 1:1-5

big bang theory
Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 1 Cor. 1:19-25
I read an article earlier today about a group of scientists who are preparing to "recreate" the "big bang theory".
The "big bang theory" as I understand it, is the supposed way our universe came into being. Allegedly, billions of years ago the universe came out of nowhere and began to expand into what we see today; but I digress. Back to the experiment, this experiment is taking place near Geneva, Switzerland about 300 feet underground in a thing (Large Hadron Collider) approximately 18 miles long.
The plan is to run protons around in the 'thing' at the speed of light, these protons will eventually collide with one another and theoretically recreate the earliest stage of the "big bang theory".
It never fails to amaze me to what lengths man will go to disprove God and His creation. The natural man cannot discern the word of God. Man refuses to believe the scripture; "In the beginning God created ...." hence they reject God and His truth so we conclude with a thought from the apostle Paul, "the world by wisdom knew not God."
